Stay Safe in Rainy Hunan: Identify Illnesses to Avoid
Introduction: Hunan faces health risks from recent rains, including respiratory and skin issues, urging vitamin D and lifestyle tips for coping.
Recently, numerous regions in Hunan have experienced an extended period of persistent rain, characterized by low temperatures, high humidity, and fluctuating atmospheric pressure. This weather not only creates a damp environment but also presents several challenges to physical health.
A cold and damp environment can undermine the human immune system, foster various pathogens, and prompt multiple illnesses, particularly affecting vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic conditions. This health awareness guide aims to support everyone in taking preventive measures and safeguarding their health in advance.
1. Respiratory diseases: The intrusion of dampness and cold can easily compromise lung health.
Continuous low temperatures and rainfall are significant contributors to the onset of respiratory diseases. The damp, chilly air directly irritates the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, diminishing their defensive capabilities and leading to airway spasms. Furthermore, in rainy weather, insufficient indoor ventilation and high humidity encourage the growth of pathogens such as mold, dust mites, and bacteria, which can readily enter the body through inhalation and trigger various respiratory ailments.
Common illnesses include the common cold, influenza, acute bronchitis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Typical symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, coughing, sputum production, chest tightness, and wheezing. Patients suffering from asthma and COPD are particularly prone to acute exacerbations, resulting in difficulty breathing.
Protective advice: Adhere to the "spring wrapping" principle, emphasizing protection for the neck, back, and feet. Wear a mask outdoors to shield against cold air and germs. During warmer midday temperatures, briefly open windows for ventilation and utilize a dehumidifier at home to maintain indoor humidity levels between 50%-60%. Avoid irritants such as cooking fumes and pollen, stay well-hydrated to keep the airways moist, and ensure that the elderly and children receive timely flu vaccinations.
2. Rheumatic joint diseases: When dampness penetrates the body, the joints often exhibit 'soreness'.
Overcast and rainy conditions, along with increasing humidity and drastic fluctuations in air pressure, can disrupt blood circulation around the joints and impact tissue fluid metabolism, leading to congestion and swelling of the joint synovium, which exacerbates inflammation. People with arthritis or previous joint injuries, as well as those who sit for extended periods or neglect to keep their joints warm, are especially vulnerable to dampness invading the joints, resulting in discomfort.
Common conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and joint pain from previous injuries.
Typical symptoms encompass joint stiffness, soreness, and pain, which tend to worsen with activity. Discomfort is notably pronounced during rainy weather.
Protective advice: Ensure that joints stay warm and avoid exposing the knees and ankles to cold air. Use knee pads as necessary. Steer clear of damp environments and minimize exposure to rain. Soaking your feet in hot water daily can promote blood circulation, and applying heat to the joints can alleviate discomfort. Avoid prolonged bending and sitting; engage in moderate physical activity to keep the joints mobile.
3. Skin diseases: Humid and stuffy environments encourage the 'proliferation' of fungi.
On rainy days, clothing often remains wet and skin is easily exposed to rainwater and humid air. Tight and non-breathable clothing can create an optimal environment for fungi and bacteria, increasing the likelihood of various skin issues. Individuals with allergies or sensitive skin are especially at risk for these problems.
Common diseases include eczema, athlete's foot, ringworm, and allergic dermatitis.
Typical symptoms involve itchy skin, red rashes, peeling, and blisters; severe cases may lead to ulceration and oozing. The itching sensation is often exacerbated at night and in humid conditions.
Protective advice: Avoid direct skin contact with rainwater; if contact occurs, rinse with clean water and dry off promptly. Ensure that clothes and bedding are dried and aired out quickly to keep them dry. Choose loose, breathable cotton attire to minimize skin friction. If you experience itching, refrain from scratching; seek medical help if symptoms become severe, and avoid misuse of corticosteroid ointments.
4. Gastrointestinal diseases: Excessive dampness obstructs the spleen, leading to digestive "temper tantrums."
From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, continuous rainy weather can easily lead to an accumulation of excess dampness within the body. This excess dampness can hinder the spleen's ability to transform and transport nutrients, which, when combined with reduced appetite, irregular eating habits, or the consumption of raw or cold food on rainy days, can easily result in gastrointestinal discomfort.
Common diseases include indigestion, acute gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Typical symptoms include a loss of appetite, abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, unformed stools, and feelings of lethargy and fatigue.
Protective advice: Prioritize a light and warm diet, consuming more foods that strengthen the spleen and eliminate dampness, such as yam, poria, and ginger. Limit the intake of cold drinks, raw fruits, and greasy foods. Pay attention to food hygiene to avoid spoiled foods; disinfect utensils promptly. Maintain a consistent schedule to prevent staying up late and engage in moderate exercise to enhance spleen and stomach function.
5. Emotions and cardiovascular issues: Gloomy weather results in both physical and emotional "depression."
Continuous rainy weather and lack of sunlight can reduce the secretion of dopamine and serotonin in the body, leading to issues such as low mood, anxiety, irritability, and insomnia. Additionally, a low-temperature, high-humidity environment can constrict blood vessels, causing fluctuations in blood pressure and increasing the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
Common issues encompass depression, anxiety, insomnia, hypertension, and coronary heart disease.
Typical symptoms include low mood, lack of energy, difficulty falling asleep, heart palpitations, dizziness, and unstable blood pressure.
Protective suggestions: Keep indoor lighting on to ensure brightness; foster communication with family and friends, listen to calming music, and watch relaxing content to uplift your mood; for individuals with cardiovascular issues, take medications as prescribed, monitor blood pressure, avoid strenuous exercise, and seek medical attention immediately if you experience dizziness or palpitations; consider moderate vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D not only regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism but also plays a role in synthesizing and regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine in the brain, which are vital for maintaining a positive mood and alleviating anxiety and depression. During rainy days, the body’s production of vitamin D decreases due to insufficient sunlight, heightening the risk of emotional downturns. Adequate vitamin D intake can effectively address emotional issues such as depression, irritability, and insomnia caused by overcast weather, assisting in stabilizing both physical and mental well-being.
Hunan Province Second People's Hospital (Provincial Brain Hospital) would like to remind you: General health tips for rainy days:
1. Stay warm and dry; carry rain gear to avoid soaking and catching a cold, and promptly change out of wet clothes upon returning home.
2. Continue to partake in moderate exercise, opting for gentle activities like indoor walking, yoga, or practicing the Eight Pieces of Brocade to enhance blood circulation and eliminate dampness.
3. Prioritize sufficient sleep, avoid late nights, and boost the body's immunity.
If symptoms such as persistent cough, severe joint pain, severe diarrhea, or prolonged low mood occur, please seek medical care promptly and avoid delays.
Although overcast and rainy weather can be challenging, appropriate scientific precautions can effectively help avoid various 'rainy day illnesses.' It is hoped that everyone can balance warmth with damp removal, optimally adjust their physical and mental states, and smoothly navigate this period of wet and cold weather!
